If you're braindead or lazy, Casual meter is literally download and run. Shinra benefits from a little bit of setup before hand, but it's all on the github wiki and is not difficult at all. Shinra looks nicer and is slightly more accurate than Casual. I notice discrepancies when comparing Shinra to Casual, but looking at teradps, Shinra is right on the money whereas Casual can be a little off. It's not huge or gamebreaking, usually no more than 10-50k, but if you wanna pinpoint it, stick with Shinra. I play as a dps and a healer and I do not have the DPS meter.

But anytime someone posts the dps results I do like to know how I did compared to others, the tought of possibly kicking someone due dps meter results has never even crossed my mind. I don't know why dps meter is bannable since it gives no edge over other players and nobody could classify it as a cheat:S I would be ok with it that every party I am in someone has the meter and posts the results after each boss. Never seen anyone talk down another player because of dps meter. I won't get dps meter myself but I hope I get to see my results more often than now which is about few times a week. Maybe I'm just succ, but I know how to improve without relying on the meter stats. It's mostly just attacking uptime and making the correct ability priority choices for most classes, nothing that a meter will help with. If you're looking at it for things like power vs crit stat builds, it's rather wrong to think the meter will tell you what's better.
The relative standard deviation is way too high to be able to tell 12% differences in any reasonable number of runs. Seeing the dps number go up over time is one thing, but I don't think seeing the number makes it go up, other than due to motivational influence.
I recently just started using skada over recount. It's much less resource intensive, and apparently, from what I hear, is more accurate.

Go to curse.com, click on the mod option at the top (not the giant download thing on the homescreen, that's not what you want), click 'World of Warcraft', download their addon manager, then find the addon 'Skada'. When you're on the Skada page, click 'Install via Curse Client' if you have downloaded the Curse Client (addon manager), after it's installed, reboot your game, make sure it's turned on via the addon button at the bottom right, and voila!
