I have just come back from Malta. I tried to use TT but just got a message saying something like ' cannot aquire appropriate satellite signal' It still showed local UK map. After not being able to use it last month in Cyprus, I wonder why I bought a TomTom One for use in Europe. Is TomTom`s idea of 'Europe' different from everyone else? If it is a software glitch then TT need to understand what plug and play means.
There is no point being abroad and being dependent on a piece of technology and it then not working, that is just an excercise in producing disgruntled customers Like the last post I wonder whether I should cut my losses and invest in Garmin. Has anyone else had similar problems? Hi dock32, The GPS on the TomTom works in any location (for instance if it is out of range of the map installed it will gray the screen instead).
When the GPS isn't available it will try and show the last known location. What may have been occuring is that the GPS hardware still had readings from before. A reset normally takes these readings and tries to retrieve the GPS locations all over again. To reset the device please follow this FAQ: target='blank' rel='nofollow - Najib. When I tried to use tom-tom in Malta,on turning it on, it did show a map of my home street in the UK. It then told me it couldn't find the satellite. Presumably had I reset it, it might have worked, but I had forgotten to pack a paperclip for this eventuality, so be warned and take a paperclip with you!
On a practical note, tom-tom is not absolutely necessary in Malta and because it is such a small island, and it is actually difficult to get lost. However the signage is not good, and certainly not as good as in the UK. Place names appear, disappear and then reappear on signs on even a straight direct road, and you will not find signs or directions coming up to roundabouts; upthey will be only at the roundabout itself. We drove back to the airport in the middle of the night, for our very early flight and the main road to the airport was very badly signed.The sign for theairport appeared and disappeared Because that was no traffic about we could slow down at Road signs and junctions. Also when you come off the main road close to the airport signs disappear completely. Had we to do the journey during the day when there was traffic about it would have been very difficult not to take the wrong road at some point. Tom-tom would have been invaluable here.

Enjoy Malta dock 32. Had a holiday in Malta recently and TomTom One XL worked OK with one exception - the map for Malta was set up as if they drive on the right, when in practice they drive on the left (just like in the UK). So, although the route finding, planning, display was fine, the voice instructions were rather weird. you approached a roundabaout wanting to turn right, so instinctively you know it's the 3rd exit.
However, TomTom would say 'take the first exit at the roundabout.' Wich, if you did, sent you in completely the wrong direction. You can imagine the number of 'Performa U Turn where possible' instructions we received until we figured this out!
So, once we learned to ignore the voice instructions for roundabouts we found TomTom was accurate and showed all the roads that existed in both Malta and Gozo (however, being Malta, their view of what is a 'road' may be a bit different from that of some other countries!). I'm not sure that this explanation is quite right, but the TomTom directions for roundabouts in Malta are definitely wrong - it will say to turn right at the roundabout when the map clearly shows that you need to go left.
The voice says to go straight over when you should be turning right - or is it left? Maltese roads - and road signs - are confusing enough already.
Also, often the 'quickest route' option will try to take you down farm tracks, or through pretty sturdy stone walls, ignoring quite good three or four lane roads. This is using a TomTom One, and the Western Europe map downloaded less than a week ago. So, until TomTom fixes this - ignore the voice, and use common sense when it tries to send you down a narrow, unsurfaced lane!
