In May I flew from Dubai to Los Angeles with a change of planes in London. Before I got on the plane I bought a nice bottle of yummy 18 year old Scotch. At Dubai Duty Free shops they asked me where I was flying. I informed them that I was changing planes in London.
They said 'no problem'. When I arrived in London and went to my next flight, security confiscated my bottle of booze. The were very nice about it, but they still took it from me. The security agent told me that you can not bring in a bottle of liquor unless it was purchased in a EU country. He also told me that Dubai Duty Free does this all the time.they'll say anything to get the sale. Anyhow, please be forewarned.
Don't buy liquor from Dubai Duty Free, especially if you are entering an EU country. The prices aren't that great anyway. I will now resist saying anything that might offend anyone from that part of the world. You unfortunate experience hasn't got anything to do with Dubai (except that they should have asked you whether you'd have a change of plane or not) but with the stupid liquid ban.
Even if you had had a direct flight to the US followed by a connection your booze would have been tossed out. Example: If you flew Dubai-New York non-stop and New York was your final destination you can buy all the booze you want. Same applies if you fly to London and that is your final destination.
However, if you change planes outside of the area you started, your booze (or any other liquid in your carry on above 100ml outside this plastic bag with ziplock and 1 liter capacity thing) is going to go into the bin: Example:Fly Dubai-London (your booze is tossed out here) New York. Or: Dubai-Frankfurt (your booze is tossed out here)-Berlin.
Or Dubai-London (your booze is tossed out here)-Edinburgh, or Dubai-New York (your booze is tossed out here) Chicago. However, if you buy Duty Free inside the EU and have a connection inside the EU it should be OK, i.e. Fly Edinburgh-London-Dubai and your booze is fine, same applies to Berlin-Madrid-Sao Paulo etc.
However if it was Edinburg-London-New-York Chicago your booze would go into the bin in New York. The rules are stupid but the Duty Free shop which doesn't tell you about it is stupid too (and nearsighted because even though you won't be back soon to cause them trouble many people will not buy their Duty Free booze anymore and stop subsidizing those of us who don't buy Duty Free because we aren't into expensive booze/perfumes.).
Also, they should either do away with the ban on liquids altogether or at least trust other Duty Free Shops (or 'certify' certain airports for 'safe' Duty Free Booze) so the travellers who buy Duty Free continue to contribute to airport revenues and continue to subsidize those that don't buy any Duty Free like myself;) (Because if the Duty Free Shops can't pay the steep rents because they sell less airport revenues from rent go down and airport passenger fees go up). Duty free is in a 'clean' and 'secure' zone and the ban does not apply to those liquids. Security at Heathrow told me that the liquor was not permitted because of a lack of EU taxation agreement with U.A.E. I don't know.the whole thing is confusing. I guess my point, if I have one, is that I couldn't have been the first person to have purchased liquor at Dubai Duty Free and had it confiscated later on. They should clearly state the rules. Anyhow, their prices were not that great anyway and I will never shop there again and I will continue to tell my friends and business associates not to spend their money at Dubai Duty Free.
It's a bad business practice on their part. I know this won't bring them to their knees or anything like that, but screw em. I say DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM DUBAI DUTY FREE. IT'S A RIP-OFF.
